Vehicle and machinery micro-credentials open to non-primary sector

14 November 2025

Primary ITO vehicle and chainsaw micro-credentials are now available for self-employed owner-operators and people working in industries not related to the primary sector.

Changes approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) mean that people working inside and outside of the primary industries can now enrol in the vehicle and machinery micro-credentials.

Business owner/operators can now also enrol, whereas previously only employees could undertake the training.

Micro-credentials offer short, targeted learning for people wanting to gain a specific skill or formalise their existing experience. They generally take two to three months to complete. The changes apply to the following micro-credentials:

People keen to enrol in a vehicle micro-credential must hold the appropriate vehicle class licence. They must also have access to a compliant vehicle (or chainsaw) for day-to-day operations, to gain practical experience and competency.

Primary ITO sector manager Tanya Ingram says this development stems from enquiries from people working in other industries who are keen to undertake the training.

“Hundreds of people have completed these micro-credentials in the primary industry, and we are delighted to now be able to offer them more widely.

“All of our qualifications are quality assured and benchmarked to ensure they meet a high standard. We also provide learner support if required, so people training with us get the full package.”

Learners working by themselves or in a remote location will need someone – whether that is a tutor or someone else – to spend time with them to verify their competency, as part of the assessment requirements.
